What speed & slalom fin does Jurjen van der Noord use in different conditions?

We caught up with Jurjen van der Noord who has been riding for Black Project Fins now for a few years and asked him what slalom and speed fin he uses and when. Hopefully his input will help empower you to choose the right fins in the online store or at your local dealer.

“I will try to explain which slalom and speed fins I use with different conditions, boards and sails. I am a speed sailor and this means that the my opinion is based on my experiences as a speed surfer. For a Formula and Slalom focussed riders other aspects might be more important.” Jurjen

Type RS
The Type RS is a high speed downwind slalom fin. For me they work best in combination with larger speed boards and sails. No flat water required, these fins eat chop! These fins haven’t got much drag, this makes them very fast on a downwind slalom course and acceleration is insane. The give a slightly slippery feeling. The more you push the fin, the more slippery it gets. I use the RS when there some real hardcore downwind slalom and I want to be the first one at the downwind marker. Learn more.

Type R
The type R is my favorite for low wind speed sailing. This fins makes it easy to go upwind again and do another speed run. The more runs you make the more chance you got to beat the others. The fins delivers loads of lift and only needs a puff of wind to help you to get on the plane. It helps to hoover large boards and do relative fast runs in relative light winds. I use the Type R in sizes from 50cm down to 32.5cm. Because it so easy to get back up wind again this fins helps you to save energy for an new sprint against you friends. For me it’s important to be able to trust on a fin. The type R never spins out. I can push it to the extreme without having the fear of crashing. Learn more.

Type S
The fastest speed fin in real world conditions. It’s my all time favorite speed fin. In theory a smaller or thinner fin might be faster but in real life almost nothing can beat this fin. A broader or tighter angle, chop or flat water, it doesn’t matter. The Type S is fast on all courses but especially loves the down wind runs. It’s very reliable and can handle tons of pressure and won’t spin out. It also gives a lot of lift. These factors make it possible to use a smaller fin then you would normally do. For instance in the past used a 29cm fin but now with the Type S I can use a 26.5cm with my 7.0m2 and 54cm wide speedboard. Shorter fins = more speed potential. If you want to be the fastest in the GPS ranking, this fin will help you to get there. I use the S-type 32cm down to 21cm. Learn more.

Type X
The Type X is the speed sailing fin for ultimate speed records. On flat water this baby can handle about anything. It especially designed for flat water and broad courses. It’s asymmetrical, this mean that it delivers a lot of lift of one side and a lot less on the other side. Most speed canals are starboard tack (right foot in front = SB). The Type X SB I used in Luderitz quite a lot, with very good results! In most flat water spots the water in shallow. Although it’s a relative small and thin fin, it’s G10 construction means it is as strong as steel. Most flat water spots are shallow. It often happens that you hit the bottom when you try to get on the plane on your tiny speed board. In the worst case it will only have a small scratch. Learn more.
