Thruster fin size guide for windsurfing wave boards

Windsurfing thruster wave board fin choice can be confusing. This quick thruster fin reference guide is aimed at simplifying options so that you can easily tune up your wave board for maximum performance and enjoyment. While boards are supplied with fins as standard these are rarely optimal for your own set of variables including weight, wind, waves, skill level etc. All riders of all abilities will benefit from tuning up their thruster wave fins, consider it the same as adjusting your downhaul or sail size. Changing to a Black Project Fins thruster set will give more speed, increased control and enhanced turning ability. You will increase the performance of your board and have more fun in a wider range of conditions. Being the fins of choice of 2 x PWA Aloha Classic Champion Morgan Noireuax the MiniEPIC thruster set up represents the pinnacle in wave performance and riders of all levels can benefit from some simple tuning.

To help riders choose their fins we have created three thruster size bands, SmallMedium & Large, each of which is divided into a number of sizes;

  • SMALL (S1, S2 & S3) for  Grom, Women & Smaller Riders (Rider weight under 70kg), these sizes are the choice of team riders such as Ingrid Larouche and Jake & Max Scfhettewi.
  • MEDIUM (M1, M2, M3 & M4) for most riders in a range of conditions (Rider weight 70 – 85 kg)
  • LARGE (L1, L2 & L3) for heavier riders on bigger boards (Rider weight 85kg +)

The chart below looks at fin choice in a little more theoretical manner and compares board size with required total area.

You will be able to order your fins by the new sizing however for the more nerdy equipment guru riders (like me) out there we will always make it possible to customize your own set by choosing your front and rear fins on their own.
